Projects often tend not to be delivered quickly enough. One key reason for this can be disproportionate influence of opposition in the planning process. While local people matter and good community relations during construction are paramount, this imbalance can be damaging to national progress, creating unnecessary delays and escalating costs. We need to address this head-on and strike a balance that considers both local concerns and the national need.

Misinformation: the silent saboteur

Misinformation is a common scourge on projects. Misunderstandings and, sometimes, active mistruths can create damaging scenarios that are hard to reverse. The best form of defence is a proactive offence. This means getting out there with your communications strategy early, setting up channels, building relationships and working through a network of advocates to communicate the message on your behalf. 

Challenges of misinformation and a perceived lack of community benefit are perhaps greatest on linear projects, where the benefits, such as the connectivity and commercial benefits offered by a railway station are not always understood but the disruption of the construction of a railway line is feared. This presents an opportunity for the industry up its game to ensure that local opposition doesn't translate into delay or even cancellation.

Active community involvement is key where concerns should be addressed head-on to mitigate opposition, ensuring smoother timelines and better budget management.

Stakeholder engagement should be seamlessly integrated into projects, making every interaction meaningful and informed.
