Mace Group, in a joint venture with Jacobs, played a pivotal role in delivering the infrastructure for Expo 2020 Dubai, the largest global event ever held in the Middle East.
Over seven years, we transformed a 1,083-acre desert site into a world-class venue capable of hosting a six-month event attended by over 24 million people. The Expo, which ran from October 2021 to March 2022, showcased innovative ideas around the themes of Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.
Mace and Jacobs managed the overall programme delivery, overseeing 40 individual projects and 300 contracts. This included the development of the masterplan, infrastructure, and public realm spaces, as well as three thematic districts: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability. These districts, covering 220,000 square meters, featured 86 buildings and were completed in just 26 months.
A highlight of the project was the iconic Al Wasl dome, a 67.5-meter-tall structure that served as the centerpiece of the Expo. The dome, which encloses 724,000 cubic meters, was a significant engineering feat, requiring 14 months of planning and assembly.
The successful delivery of Expo 2020 Dubai has left a lasting legacy for the region, transitioning the site into a smart city known as District 2020.
