Founded in 1884, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of Hong Kong’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, offering dining, social, sporting, and recreational facilities. The Sha Tin Racecourse, with a capacity of 85,000, is the larger of the two racecourses run by the club and hosts the ‘Turf World Championship’ and the Hong Kong International Race—two of the world’s richest race days.
In 2011, we were appointed to initiate extensive renovations to ensure customers enjoy an unparalleled race day experience. The project had three unique phases. The first phase involved demolishing and rebuilding significant areas of the grandstands, updating facilities such as lifts and chilled water systems, and introducing a stunning new glass façade in place of exterior terrace seating. The second phase included delivering more first-class restaurants, betting halls, and amending large-scale mechanical, electrical, and public health elements. We also undertook a major overhaul of the mechanical, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, including installing new chillers.
The final phase saw the construction of 6,000 m sq of new space, with an overall construction value of HKD200m. This included alterations, additional works, fit-out, electrical and mechanical works, and infrastructure upgrades.
The result? A fresh, modern, and state-of-the-art facility for a new generation racecourse at one of the world’s largest horse-racing venues. Despite the challenges of working in a live environment, each complex phase was delivered within tight schedules, on budget, and to exceptional quality standards. Our work was recognised at the RICS Hong Kong Awards 2015, where we won the ‘Refurbishment/Restoration Team of the Year’ for the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
This project exemplifies our commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
