Placemaking, interconnectivity, regeneration. We combine deep consultancy and construction expertise to define and deliver exceptional transit orientated development.
Population growth, urban and suburban development. These factors are driving an expansion of railways the world over. Balancing the needs of passengers, freight, operators, and asset owners presents a complex challenge to deliver efficient, sustainable, and accessible rail services.
People need reliable and frequent access to jobs and education to stimulate economic growth and bring value back to their local businesses. A quality passenger experience enhances our day to day lives and developing state of the art stations and hubs is key to this.
With many countries mandating more sustainable buildings and infrastructure more resource conscious and lower carbon stations are essential to combatting the climate challenge. Stations in the UK are now targeting net zero operational carbon, further supporting a cleaner, greener rail network.
The potential of new and refurbished stations as destinations and generators of community value demands holistic expertise. We have experience of transforming stations into diverse hubs, integrating retail and residential spaces to become more than a stopping point for trains. From Brent Cross West in London literally bridging the gap between neighbouring communities, to a transformative infrastructure programme on the Hudson Tunnel in New York City. The ability of our rail infrastructure to reshape the entire built environment represents a tremendous opportunity for social value.
Contribution to community development
Our work with Metrolinx in Canada is an example of rail infrastructure’s profound impact on the quality of life of local people. By connecting poorly connected areas with major urban centres, the project has improved access to essential services and opportunities for residents whilst reducing social isolation and promoting greater cohesion through a community-based, multi-year youth strategy.
Smooth journeys, minimising disruption
Our track record for complex construction projects makes us the partner of choice where it is essential that disruption to passengers and station staff is minimised. We oversaw the building of The Shard in tight proximity to London Bridge Station, used by well over one million commuters every day. We led the transformation of Birmingham New Street Gateway – the UK’s busiest station outside London and the largest station development in Europe – while keeping the station open for business.
Placemaking and regeneration
Rapidly modernising nations such as India are transforming their station infrastructure, with the aim of greatly enhancing the end user experience. Mace is part of a partnership to transform the mega rail station located at the heart of Ahmedabad City. The development will produce a modern multi modal transport hub, combining Indian Railways, Metro Rail and High-Speed Rail, as well as commercial, residential and retail offerings. The programme also includes the construction of associated infrastructure and the integration of local heritage monuments.
