Consultancy - South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria
With international industry experience and a decade spent in Sub-Saharan Africa, Kelvin is growing Mace’s offering across South Africa – shaping communities and introducing global best practice to maximise efficiencies and quality.
- How has your career developed?
I joined Mace’s London office in 2008 and worked on a Building Schools for the Future programme before transferring to our Sub-Saharan Africa hub in 2010 to lead projects across South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Ghana and Zimbabwe.
Between 2013 and 2018 I worked for a South African project management company, where I built a stronger understanding of the local construction and development market, and in 2018 I returned to Mace as the Country Manager for South Africa.
- Why Mace?
The opportunity to travel, to work with global experts and to have the freedom and responsibility to make a difference. Mace will support your growth so long as you show initiative.Since re-joining Mace my responsibilities have grown - additionally managing our expansion into a number of other countries across Southern and Western Africa.
- What do you enjoy most about your current role at Mace?
I enjoy the variety of the role and working across geographies. I also like the day-to-day tasks of running a business unit – it’s rewarding and motivating. It’s important to me that we work on projects that have an impact - where we can look back and know we have made a difference to people’s lives.
- What is your proudest achievement at Mace?
We delivered a 330,000 sq. ft. campus for a global bank in record-breaking time within an old re-purposed factory in Pretoria. The project pushed the boundaries of quality and design. It gave us the opportunity to stretch our thinking and really demonstrate where we are able to bring added value.
- What do you see as the big trend for your specialism in the next five years?
The African market is starting to demand holistic solutions rather than professional services only and, to this end, Mace’s delivery-focused approach is resonating with many of our clients. We are now delivering multi-disciplinary consulting as well as turn-key solutions.
I also see the African market moving towards using modularisation and offsite manufacturing that other countries around the world have really embraced. We are seeing great success stories of how these innovations are transforming the industry and there is no reason why the same efficiencies wouldn’t benefit projects in Africa.
- What are you passionate about outside of work?
I love running, canoeing and being outdoors. I’m a very active person and have a lot of energy inside and outside of work.
- If you hadn’t got into this line of work what do you think you might be doing?
I cannot imagine doing anything else, I belong in this industry.
