The value of resilience delivered

Recently, the Peru-UK Government to Government partnership published its third-year report , detailing the progress it has made in delivering Peru’s resilient infrastructure programme. This week, the United Nations and Climate Group will host their annual Climate Week, providing a perfect chance to reflect on the progress we’re making to fortify communities facing extreme threats.

When the 2017 El Niño floods devastated northern and central Peru, we set out to deliver 140 projects to rebuild crucial infrastructure with resilience. As we launched the work in 2020, the quickly escalating global pandemic amplified the crisis in Peru. With heightened vigilance, we used digital collaboration tools and innovative team management methods to safely and effectively mobilise a mega-programme from various locations while safeguarding the clients, and our people, to the fullest extent.

In three years, despite considerable challenges and complexities, the Peruvian government notes that we are delivering the programme of works in greatly accelerated timeframes compared to those normally required to complete similarly sized projects. Moreover, we’re elevating standards of construction, operability and resilience on a national scale, while upskilling local talent, ensuring that they can continue to secure high quality, safe and sustainable results for their country for years to come.

We’ve completed 57 of the most critical projects— healthcare facilities and schools serving more than 5 million people—with 45 additional projects nearing completion. Along with public facilities, we’re delivering flood protections on a massive scale, spanning 17 river basins and 7 cities. And in the past year, when torrential rains and flood-inducing storms returned to Peru, the facilities and defences performed as planned, providing failsafe refuge for more people than ever before.

These moments magnify the difference that such investments make, starting with the basic assurance of safety. In full measure, they open possibilities and present tangible opportunities to improve lives and livelihoods.

In Peru, it highlights a vibrant culture and proud society fortified by a great collaboration of governments, residents, and local businesses. We see people and communities growing stronger, with greater optimism for the future. In my view, there’s no greater reward for the client and the UK Delivery Team than that
