CloseProject story
West Midlands Trains’ Bletchley Train Maintenance Depot, largely unused for over 15 years, is undergoing a £72 million redevelopment to become the principal maintenance base for West Midlands Trains’ new Class 730/2 electric fleet and servicing location for diesel units operating Marston Vale and East West Rail. This ambitious initiative will set new standards in rail infrastructure and sustainability, paving the way for a greener future. We are proud to play a leading role in its delivery.
Central to the redevelopment is a commitment to sustainability. The new solar farm at Bletchley will produce 170 kW of power, energizing 11 PV charging points. We are dedicated, not only to reducing energy costs, but also to promoting green energy solutions at Mace, and this work aligns perfectly with our broader decarbonisation agenda. By supporting West Midlands Trains’ goal of growing passenger use of rail services, we are contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly rail network. The extension of the existing shed by 45 metres and the addition of six new electrified rails to accommodate five-car units, as well as the refurbishment of accommodation areas built in the 1950s and 60s, are just a few examples of how we are blending the old with the new to futureproof rail infrastructure.
Our dedicated team at Bletchley, supported by a larger interface team across other sites, embodies the spirit of collaboration and innovation. Together, we are overcoming challenges such as the lack of road access and historical site issues to create a seamless and integrated rail network. This involved detailed planning and coordination to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
The Bletchley Depot project is more than just a construction endeavour; it is a story of resilience and forward-thinking. Despite significant challenges, our team has implemented solutions and meticulously managed ground conditions by safely disposing of c20,000m3 of contaminated land, ensuring the depot meets current standards and is prepared for future demands.
As we approach the completion date in autumn 2025, Bletchley Depot will stand as a beacon of the UK’s plans for a net-zero railway, supporting the broader goals of sustainable and efficient rail transport. This project is a testament to our commitment to excellence and innovation in rail infrastructure, delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the London Northwestern Railway services for decades to come.
