- Hosted the second largest multi-discipline sporting event in the world, with 8,500 athletes competing from 41 different countries, enhancing Lima’s global reputation.
- Created 5 world-class venues and a new athletes' village with 1,100 apartments, benefiting thousands of local residents within the district of Villa El Salvador.
- Boosted investment in Lima and inspired confidence in closing Peru's US$160 billion infrastructure gap through innovative contracting.
Held for the first time in Peru, the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games were more than just a sporting event.
In addition to bringing together top-class athletes from across the Americas, the Games, which are the second largest multi-discipline sporting event in the world, served as a catalyst for change in Lima, leaving a lasting legacy for the people who live there.
By using our experience from the London 2012 Games, and the subsequent transformation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, we helped Lima to develop venues that are accessible and sustainable, ensuring their long-term future.
The Games are bringing valuable investment into Lima, and the way the construction sector positively responded to our innovative contracting approach has given Peru confidence that its US$160billion infrastructure gap can be closed.
As well as the economic benefits, the Games also generated huge social value. Communities across the whole of Peru, and Lima in particular, celebrate the Games as an opportunity to inspire, with the venues seen as a way for people to use sport to enhance their lives for years to come. A fantastic example of this is the brand new Athletes’ Village, consisting of 1,100 apartments, which will become much needed housing for thousands of families in the hardworking district of Villa El Salvador.
The legacy potential of the Lima 2019 Games is vast and Mace is proud to have played a part in ensuring long-lasting benefits. We worked as part of a UK Delivery Team – which was set up by the UK Department for International Trade as part of a Government to Government (G2G) agreement with Peru – focusing on developing and executing the overarching delivery strategy for the core permanent venue infrastructure, establishing and implementing an integrated programme management office function, and supporting the delivery of key venues.
