The first delivery model of its kind in the higher education sector, the Sheffield Hallam University Alliance is redefining how we approach the delivery of university building programmes. Under a single contract, Sheffield Hallam University and partners BAM Construction, BDP, Arup and CBRE, supported by Mace, are collaborating to deliver this ambitious programme that creates long-term value for the university and its students.
The ambitious Campus Plan, launched in 2018, aims to move to a single city centre campus over a 20-year time frame. Delivering a vibrant and engaging campus that is focused on supporting applied learning and flexible settings for teaching and collaborating, Phase One of the campus plan is due to open in 2024.
Appointed as Scheme Alliance Manager, Mace acts as an independent party to the alliance, validating the partners’ activity whilst ensuring that it aligns with the core values of the Alliance contract. Enhancing operational efficiency, the alliance empowers each member to offer more frequent, reliable and competitive services to the client.
Innovative and ambitious in principle, the campus plan aims to enhance the Hallam experience by bringing high quality, distinctive spaces to implement the university’s values. Through providing a range of inclusive and advanced learning and work settings, the Hallam Alliance will transform the University, making it a destination of choice; inspiring creativity, collaboration, knowledge sharing and engagement between students, staff and business partners, all whilst supporting wellbeing and civic community engagement.
With a shared vision, mission and goals towards sustainability, the alliance will help SHU tackle its Climate Action Strategy by introducing a new green space within the city. Hallam Green – a public landscaped area - will act as a spine that runs through the three teaching blocks. The new space will enhance ecology and biodiversity by planting 428m2 of species rich green space and lawn.
These measures will ensure that the campus will be efficient and sustainable to operate and maintain, both financially and environmentally.
Phase One will see the development in the campus’s Cultural Industries Quarter. It will focus on forming a new gateway to the university and the city by activating the southern edge of Howard Street. Made up of three individual teaching blocks, all built simultaneously, the Howard Street developments will be named after local reservoirs: Redmires, Strines and Langsett.
