Justice and Blue Light

Security. Safety. Blue light services.

The pressure on blue light services has never been greater, with rising demand, constrained funding and greater taxpayer scrutiny. Coupled with sustainability challenges associated with ageing estates and it’s clear that fast, radical, collaborative transformation is needed.

Our clients are delivering services of national importance and we work in partnership with them to ensure they have the buildings and facilities they need to keep the public safe and the country secure.

From the emergency services to delivering court facilities and prison estates, we have extensive experience providing strategic advice and construction consultancy and management services to the sector, supporting clients to deliver mission critical projects and programmes across the UK.

For over 30 years, we have been supporting the delivery of their projects and programmes, providing multi-disciplinary services across the justice and blue lights sector – from single building resilience upgrades to multi-faceted prison infrastructure programmes.

Our approach is grounded in practical delivery experience, working within strict financial and time parameters, we adapt, upgrade and maintain estates to meet and surpass client expectations. We bring modern methods of construction and the latest digital innovations and changing technologies to meet the needs of local communities.

Drawing upon decades of hands-on experience we provide broader thinking and a solutions-focused approach to client challenges.

Our work with the Ministry of Justice, has seen us deliver over 240 projects from new build prisons to probation facilities, courts to youth custody and border protection. These range from modernising court rooms, increasing video capabilities and improving fire safety to installing renewable energy sources in prisons.

In the blue light sector we have experience in the disposal, acquisition, consultancy, construction, facilities management and strategic advice on the consolidation of estates to deliver value for money and maximum value to communities.

We have delivered redesign and refit of existing fire, ambulance and police buildings and led the delivery of vital new purpose-built headquarters or stations that are welcoming to the public incorporating facilities such as gyms, control centres.

Why Mace?

Our regional presence. Our regional teams are tapped into the local communities, providing focus and local understanding. We are proud to have built strong local supply chains, ensuring skills and jobs benefit local people. This is backed up by our national skill base, expertise and experience of delivery across the justice and blue light sectors.

Our collaborative approach.

By working collaboratively, we ensure all stakeholders are engaged from the start, helping to shape and inform delivery outcomes. Our agile, partnership approach minimises disruption, increases efficiency and gives all partners a voice on critical design considerations.

Our ability to respond to change.

We can respond to changes quickly and efficiently. Thanks to our rapid response to global issues such as Covid and early engagement with stakeholders, we are able to minimise disruption and keep vital justice and emergency services running, maintain delivery of high priority prison projects and reconfigure projects in the court system. Through updating their design to meet social distancing and incorporating more video and digital technology we’ve helped keep courts operational.

We can support the whole lifecycle of a project.

Our teams work across design and development, consultation, construction and operations so we can help at any stage of a project. This joined up approach and internal expertise means we’re able to tailor our service to individual requirements and identify and solve problems and delays early.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

We support across the entire life cycle of the built environment driving forward net zero ambitions. From advising on carbon reduction through to renewable energy sources or building sustainable, healthy buildings we can support on sustainability and biodiversity net gains.

Social value.

Delivering benefit to local communities is one way we add value to our clients. By incorporating community facilities into public buildings, using strong local supply chains and by employing local people are just some of the ways we maximise positive impacts on local people. Recent projects including HMP Five Wells and Fosse Way have delivered hundreds of jobs, training and created a skills legacy for the local community and are a key element of the prisons’ rehabilitation programme for ex-offenders.
