Sustainability

Mace is accelerating the built environment’s response to the climate emergency

The built environment holds many of the keys to a sustainable world, but bold and swift action is needed.

We recognise that our industry has been slow to adjust, so we’re taking a lead by committing ourselves to ambitious goals. But it is not just talk, we must be at the forefront of implementing sustainable outcomes for our clients and partners so that together we create a world where communities thrive now, and for generations to come.

The industry is navigating some of the most complex challenges related to climate change, from the impact of extreme weather necessitating more resilient infrastructure, ageing assets that are not operationally efficient, to the sheer scarcity of valuable materials used within construction. Transforming the way we consume resources, build and renew the built environment is key to becoming more sustainable and delivering low and zero carbon buildings and infrastructure.

We believe we have a responsibility to spearhead positive change. As founding members of CO2nstructZero, SteelZero and ConcreteZero we advocate for more responsible procurement on key building components and seek to support our partners and client to implement best practice throughout our global hubs.

We have the passion and responsibility to pursue a more sustainable world.

Steps Without Footprints

Our Steps Without Footprints strategy details our efforts to reduce carbon emissions year-on-year and continue to trial and embed new solutions along the way.

Our aim is to accelerate the built environment’s response to the climate emergency with some bold targets that look beyond Mace’s direct responsibility and into our scope of influence.

Among these targets is our commitment to identifying 10 million tonnes of carbon savings on our client’s projects by 2026. We own our impact and the impact we can have to make our industry more sustainable.

Circularity

At Mace, we are leading the call for a circular construction industry. We want to close the circle, and we want you to join us on this journey.

To date, we have published two in depth reports on circular economy.

The first, Closing the Circle examined the sustainability and economic potential of London and other global megacities transitioning to circular construction practices.

The second, Closing Material loops created alongside Arup was a study of carbon intensive construction materials like concrete, steel and glazing – analysing the gap needed to create 100% circular building components.

Biodiversity

Protecting our shared natural resources and habitats is imperative to the future of the built environment. To help address the climate and ecological emergency, there must be a step change in how developments seek to deliver a net biodiversity gain.

Through our partnerships with conservation organisations, our ecological consultancy, and volunteering hours of our people across the globe – Mace is striving to create a positive impact on nature.
