Mace appointed by Siemens Mobility for £200m rail manufacturing facility

Mace, the international consultancy and construction company, has been appointed by Siemens Mobility Limited to support the delivery of a new £200m rail manufacturing facility in East Yorkshire.

With work commencing immediately, Mace will provide a range of services to Siemens Mobility to support the development, including project and cost management, health and safety work, and environmental expertise.

The industry-leading facilities in Goole will include approximately 860,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing, commissioning, warehouse buildings and stabling sidings, as well as a four-storey, 54,000 sq. ft. office building.

The development will take place on a 104-acre site close to junction 36 of the M62 motorway and will create up to 700 jobs with a further 250 during the construction period and an additional 1,700 potential UK supply chain roles.

Speaking of the contract (expected to span three and a half years), Colin Harvey, Director for the North at Mace, said:

Mace’s appointment builds on the consultancy company’s previous work for Siemens on the £310m Green Port Hull development. The facility, opened in 2016, features a wind turbine blade factory, as well as logistics and port facilities. 

During this contract, Mace provided project, commercial and environment, health and safety management for the construction of the blade factory and service warehouse, and were technical overseers of the harbour development undertaken by Associated British Ports.

Pending planning approval, construction of the Goole rail manufacturing facility is anticipated to begin in spring next year and will be delivered in phases. The first phase of the manufacturing facilities is expected to open in 2023 and it is anticipated the development will be fully operational in 2025.
